After a long journey from Los Angeles, with a layover in London, both MacArthur and the band landed in Dubai only to discover that their equipment was missing.
Arriving at 1 a.m. with a show lined up for the next day, they were in a bind—no guitars, no amplifiers, and no pedals anywhere to be found.
However, MacArthur was not one to back down.
He was determined to ensure the show would go on.
Fortunately, he had packed some essential gear with him.
After a frantic search through local music shops and a quick call to a contact at Ibanez, he assembled enough equipment in just four hours.
This scramble not only allowed for a sound check but also culminated in a stellar performance that thrilled the audience.
A Unique Rig for a Memorable Performance
MacArthur’s makeshift rig included Boss pedals—specifically, the CH-1 Super Chorus and two DD-7 Digital Delays.
He noted that these reliable components were readily available, proving effective under pressure, despite the stark departure from the meticulously prepared setup, which had featured a Fractal amp modeler at its center.
He explained that the Beat rig was distinct from Vai’s usual configuration.
Their custom setup included basic yet pivotal elements, such as a wah pedal, overdrive, an MXR Phase 90, and a DigiTech Whammy DT.
Notably, the Xotic EP Booster held a special place in Vai’s heart during the tour, offering a gritty sound that enhanced certain synth tones and broadened their musical palette.
